Unveiling the World of Millets: A Nutritious Alternative to Rice and Wheat
Hey there, fellow foodies! Join me on my journey with millets. It all started when I was looking for healthier alternatives to the usual rice and wheat. That’s when I stumbled upon the world of millets – From improving health to promoting sustainable agriculture, these tiny grains pack a powerful punch..
A Wake-Up Call to Health: Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Change
Life has a way of presenting us with challenges that force us to reevaluate our priorities and make positive changes. For me, that challenge came a couple of years ago in the form of an angioplasty. I realized that my sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits were the cause of the heart attack.
It was a wake-up call to take better care of my health and well-being, and I knew I needed to make some significant lifestyle changes. Thanking God for a second chance at life, I realized only a holistic approach to healthy living will be a way to return God’s favor. Smoking was a major concern that I had to give up, and then I had to reduce my weight and get fitter, and last but not least I had to maintain a balanced and healthy diet.
Embracing Serenity: My Journey to Mysore
Shortly after my medical procedure for angioplasty, I had the opportunity to relocate temporarily from the bustling city of Mumbai to the serene city of Mysore, which proved to be the perfect environment for me to rest and recuperate. The quiet and clean surroundings, peaceful atmosphere, and favorable weather provided me with the ideal conditions to begin my journey toward a healthier and happier life.
My decision to move to Mysore turned out to be a blessing in disguise, surprisingly I effortlessly kicked the smoking habit, and my fitness regime started off in earnest, I was fortunate to be living close to Chamundi Hills, which provided a serene and refreshing environment for my morning walks and jogs.
Food Alternatives: Challenging the Unhealthy Whites
The next hurdle on my journey was finding wholesome food alternatives that would cater to my health needs while satisfying my taste buds. I was specifically advised to curtail my consumption of the three notorious “unhealthy whites”: rice, sugar, and refined flour and of course salt as well. Of these, rice posed the greatest challenge, as it had been a staple in my meals for as long as I could remember. A meal without rice was unthinkable!
Amidst my search for healthier choices, I stumbled upon the ancient grains known as millets. Captivated by their abundant health benefits and incredible culinary versatility, I was drawn deeper into the captivating world of millet.
Ragi and Jowar: Nostalgic Flavors of Childhood
I should admit till such time I went to Mysore I did not know that something called millet existed though I have been eating a couple of varieties of millet since childhood.
Growing up in various parts of Karnataka, I had been familiar with certain types of millet such as Finger millet (Ragi/Nachani) and Songram (Jowar). Jowar was usually consumed in the form of roti along with brinjal sabji. At the same time, Ragi was a popular ingredient for morning porridge and dishes like Ragi Mudde (Ragi ball-shaped dish) that were typically served with Soppu Saru (Palak/Spinach Curry) or mutton curry as a non-veg combo. While these are still popular dishes in certain communities and parts of Karnataka, nowadays, things have changed. Taking advantage of the health benefits of these grains, we see a lot more innovative dishes and products for this millet.
Embracing Millets: My Journey from Skepticism to Substitution
However, these millets did not substitute the versatile rice, which is a staple food for most South Indians including me. But having taken a decision to a healthier lifestyle, in earnest I kept researching for a healthier option for rice.
That’s when I discovered the inspiring work of Dr. Khader Valli, a renowned advocate for millets in India. Through his articles, I learned about the incredible health benefits of millet. Initially skeptical, I decided to give Millet a try. To my surprise, Millets like Kodo, Proso, Foxtail, Little, and Barnyard proved to be excellent substitutes for rice. They became the centerpiece of my meals, offering unique flavors and abundant nutrition.
This journey from skepticism to substitution transformed my perspective on millets. Their versatility and goodness have not only replaced rice but also contributed to my overall well-being. I’m thankful for Dr. Khader Valli’s insights and the remarkable benefits of millet. Millet has now become an integral part of my pursuit of a healthier, balanced life.

From plain millet to flavorful dishes like Millet Palav, Millet khichdi, millet Bisi bela bath, and Millet dosa, I discovered a whole new world of culinary possibilities.
